Meet The Coaches

Wesley Phipps

Head Coach - Varsity

One of the most decorated performers in the long history of Grove City High School wrestling, 2012 GCHS grad Wesley Phipps is in his fourth season as Grove City head coach. The 2012 PIAA Class AA champion at 182 pounds, Phipps compiled a 144-14 career record. He placed fifth, third and second at the state championships, respectively, during his first three years at Grove City.

Phipps continued his career at Penn State from under head coach Cael Sanderson, helping the Nittany Lions to three NCAA team championships. He concluded his collegiate career as a graduate student at Mercyhurst University, where he twice qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.

Coach Phipps thanks the Grove City community for its support over the years and for its continued support this season and in the future.

Jared Sample

Varsity Assistant Coach

A 2014 Grove City wrestling Alum Jared was named to the all-district and all-region second teams, he recorded the most pins as a senior and was a 4 year letter winner. Jared is also a Jiggs Wolford Award winner.

Jared went on to wrestle at Gannon University where he majored in Sport and Exercise Science /  Physical Therapy. 

Beau Fisher

Volunteer Assistant

A 2006 Grove City High graduate, Beau Fisher is in his fourth season as an assistant wrestling coach at GCHS. Fisher concluded his high school career by taking fifth at 145 at the PIAA Championships. He went 72-23 over his final two seasons at Grove City. 

Fisher then wrestled at the University of Virginia. As a senior, he took fourth at 165 pounds at the ACC Championships, helping Virginia to the 2010 team title.

Shelton Mack

Volunteer Assistant

Shelton Mack, born in Meadville, PA, is a Meadville HS graduate where he finished as a 3x State Qualifier with a record of 141-21. He competed collegiately for the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a 3x NCAA qualifier.  He went on to coach at several universities including UVA (ACC), Maryland (B1G), Columbia and Princeton University (Ivy).  Post collegiately, Mack competed on the international circuit where he finished his career as a 3x World Team Trials Qualifier, 2021 UWW Senior National Champion and 2021 Pan American Champion. 



Joel Stearns

Volunteer Assistant

Graduated from Titusville high school where I was a 3 x district 10 champion. Went on to wrestle for Edinboro university after high school. After college joined the US army and wrestle for the world class athlete program for 4 years. Was the head coach for Titusville high school for eleven years and had over 100 wins coaching.

Deven Dittrich

Volunteer Assistant


A GCHS alum, Deven was a 3x D10 runner-up while wrestling for Coach Marty Ruley. Spent sixteen seasons as an assistant under Coach Ruley, including nine focused on the middle school and seven with the high school. Spends free time with children, Langdon Ferguson (GCHS ‘24) and Leiara Ferguson (GCHS ‘26).

 


Ken Miller

Middle School Head Coach

Grove City native Ken Miller will serve as the head coach of Grove City’s middle school program this season. He is also in charge of strength and conditioning for the entire Grove City wrestling program.

A 1985 Grove City High School graduate, Miller excelled in football, wrestling and track. He has coached wrestling at various levels in Grove City since 1996, including the youth and J.O. programs.

Kyle Mariacher

Assistant Coach

A football and wrestling standout at nearby Mercer High School, Kyle joins the Grove City coaching staff for the 2022-23 season.  Kyle twice qualified for the PIAA Championships during his wrestling career from 2009 to 2012.

Derek Degraaf

Middle School Assistant

Former Grove City head wrestling coach Derek DeGraaf returns to the coaching staff this winter. A 2005 Grove City High School graduate, DeGraaf spent the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons as Grove City's head wrestling coach.
